History of Valley of Flowers

Valley of flowers is popularly known for its diverse range of endemic flora and beauty. The region is also home to some rare and endangered animal species. You may spot animals like Asiatic black deer, snow leopard, musk deer, red fox, brown bear and blue sheep.
Historically, the beauty of the place was unknown to world until in 1931, three British mountaineers came here. They lost their way and happened to discover this alluring valley and named it Valley of Flowers.

Brief introduction Valley of Flowers

The valley of flowers national park is the second core zone of the Nanda Devi biosphere reserve, The credit for the discovery of the valley of flowers generally goes to the British mountaineer Frank S. Smythe and R.L Holdsworth who incidentally reached this valley after a successful expedition of mount Kamet in 1931. Fascinated by its beauty and grandeur Frank S. Smythe revisited this area in 1937 and published a book named “the valley of flowers” (1938).
Frank S. Smythe writing made this valley world famous, The valley of flowers lies main valleys of Alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga in Garhwal Himalayas in chamoli district of Uttaranchal. River pushpawati flows through this valley which has its source in the Tipra glacier which extends up to Gauri parvat peak, It is a flat valley 5 km. long and 2 km. wide, Its altitudinal range varies from 3200 to 6675 m. The park is surrounded by Gauhri parvat (6590 m.) and Ratovan (6126 m.) in the east, Kuntkhal (4430 m. in the west), in the west, Saptring (503Pm) in the south and Neelgiri parvat (6479 m.) in the north.
